Medical Cannabis Dosing and Product Guide

At Doctor Springs, Dr. Julia Springs MD MPH believes that patient education is essential to successful cannabis therapy. This guide covers the fundamentals of dosing, delivery methods, and product selection to help you get the most from your treatment.
THC vs. CBD
THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol)
-- The primary psychoactive compound. Effective for pain, nausea, appetite stimulation, sleep, and PTSD symptoms. May cause euphoria at higher doses.
CBD (Cannabidiol)
-- Non-psychoactive. Effective for anxiety, inflammation, seizures, and as a complement to THC. Can moderate THC side effects.
Balanced Ratios (1:1, 2:1, etc.)
-- Combining THC and CBD often produces better results than either alone, with fewer side effects. will recommend the optimal ratio for your condition.
Delivery Methods
Inhalation (Flower and Vaporizers)
Fastest onset (1-5 minutes). Duration 2-3 hours. Best for breakthrough pain, acute anxiety, and nausea. Vaporization is preferred over smoking for respiratory health.
Oral (Capsules, Edibles, RSO)
Slower onset (30-90 minutes). Duration 4-8 hours. Best for sustained symptom relief, especially chronic pain and sleep. Start with a low dose and wait at least 2 hours before taking more.
Sublingual (Tinctures and Oils)
Moderate onset (15-30 minutes). Duration 3-6 hours. Placed under the tongue for faster absorption than edibles. Allows precise dosing with a measured dropper.
Topical (Creams, Balms, Patches)
Applied directly to the skin for localized relief. Does not produce psychoactive effects. Effective for joint pain, muscle soreness, and skin conditions. Transdermal patches can provide systemic effects.
Dosing Principles
Start low, go slow
-- Begin with the lowest effective dose and increase gradually
Keep a journal
-- Track dose, product, timing, and symptom response
Be patient
-- Finding the right dose and product may take several weeks of adjustment
Consistency matters
-- Regular dosing often produces better results than as-needed use for chronic conditions
